DevBlog #2: Diversifying Gameplay

Welcome back for our second edition of devblogs about our upcoming game – Spellers! Let’s get right into it!

Quick Recap:

  • 2 New Gamemodes;
  • Quickplay (Matchmaking);
  • Lobby Settings (Custom Game modifiers);

New Gamemodes

In Spellers you have 16+ spells to choose from. The variety is big and the build options are endless. More importantly with good communication and spell combinations you can wipe the entire opposing team. However we’re trying bend the rules with a few gamemodes addition:

Unique Spell Gamemode

As the name of the Gamemode suggests – yes, you can only choose up to one spell per player. We believe that this gamemode will encourage our players to be more in sync with each other. While you have 5 spells you should be able to attack, defend and be mobile. If you’re limited to only one though, you might need to rely on someone else to defend or attack for you. We’re excited to see your team compositions when we fully release the game!

Random Spell Gamemode

In this gamemode there is not even a Spell Selection screen. Dive straight into the game and let us all pray to the RNG Gods to bring us the right spell at the right time. Our first thought when we conceptualized this gamemode was that it will take away from the fun by forcing players to use spells that they don’t like. After some testing we had a few grand moments where our testers would brew a delicious soup of 7 different spells all by themselves and massively outplay the opposing team. As for releasing the gamemode – we’ll let you cook and see how you utilize and learn each spell even if you wouldn’t necessarily pick them.

Secret in development Gamemode

We are not allowed to say too much about the gamemode we’re currently developing. Let’s just say you’ll need to use a lot of protection ;). Maybe there will be specific roles for each player… who knows?

Quickplay

Before we release the game we did some research on what would be a good quality of life improvement. We would like to introduce “Quickplay”. Quickplay is a feature that allows fast match making that skips through all customizations, selections and throws you directly into the game. With it you can launch Spellers, press Quickplay, choose a gamemode, and you’ll be put into the game while skipping passwords and lobbies with reduced queue time.

Lobby Settings

To add more diversity to our game we decided to let you choose your own numbers. In the lobby settings you’ll be able to tweak your Damage Multiplier, Health Multiplier, Jump Multiplier, Speed Multiplier and we have also added a No Damage Mode.

We are aware that games get repetitive overtime and we’d like to ensure that ours keeps you motivated to play as much as possible. If you’re tired of the traditional gamemodes you can maybe make yourself jump over the moon using the Jump Multipliers. Or maybe play a game of one-shot where your damage is so high that you one-shot anyone you hit. The possibilities are endless and your imagination is what will drive your experience in Spellers.

Keep in mind that Lobby Settings are only enabled in private games and aren’t eligible for public ones.

That’s it for this DevBlog. We are sooooo excited to see you cook! We have a few more gamemodes planned for the future but for now we can only let you know about these.
